Getting Involved: Volunteer for Arizona Greyhound Rescue
As with most pet-related, non-profit organizations that save lives -- volunteerism is vital to our success. There are many soothing hands and dedicated hearts that go into rescuing one dog. AGR realizes that everyone has various amounts of time and skills to offer and we appreciate everyone for their efforts great and small. Please peruse the list to see where you fit in and what you can do to help.

Volunteer Code of Conduct - All volunteers must agree and abide by AGR's Code of Conduct to protect what is most important to the organization: the hounds.  AGR's Code of Conduct can be downloaded here.

Liability Waiver - All volunteers must also sign the liability of waiver form, which can be downloaded here.


Fostering – Greyhound socialization is a key component to successful adoption. Fostering is especially beneficial if your situation doesn’t allow for adoption of an animal at this time in your life. Fostering is one of the greatest gifts you can give to a greyhound. By getting a greyhound out of the kennel, you could be saving the life of a hound coming off the track with nowhere else to go. Adoption Coordinator – You would join the ranks of the dedicated existing adoption coordinators. We are currently looking for ACs in Midtown and Green Valley/Sahuarita. When a new online application comes in for your area, you would be the initial point of contact with the potential adopter, arrange for a home inspection, let the potential adopter know the availability of suitable dogs and where to meet them, and arrange for the actual adoption. It’s a great way to get to know new adopters and dogs.

Meet-and-Greet Tabling
Put your best face forward and volunteer to table for 2 hours once a month or more on the weekends at PetsMart, PETCO, Bookmans or other venues. Tabling is often the first step to piquing potential interest in an adoptable greyhound. New volunteers will be paired with an existing team so you can learn the ropes.

Kennel Turnout
Spend some time at the kennel, walking and exercising the hounds.  This is the location for the intake of hounds retiring from the track.  Only requirement is large doses of TLC from you.  Wet kisses from the hounds are guaranteed!

Transporting – Perhaps you’d rather get behind the wheel instead of meeting people face to face. Transporting hounds to and from weekend tabling events takes a few hours a week as does squiring hounds to and from vet appointments. Critical: We need people willing to spend a few hours on the weekend transporting kennel dogs to meet and greet venues especially from the kennel to the eastside and back. During those two hours you could go shopping, visit a friend, go for walk, or drink a latte and go wireless, or hang out at the meet-and-greet.

Grant Writing – A continual flow of grant monies for dog food, medical supplies, spay/neutering, broken bones, micro-chipping, Valley Fever testing, and educating the community is crucial to our coffers and the number of dogs we can rescue. Grant writing can be done from the confines of your own keyboard. You can do this solo or make it a team effort. AGR is looking for seasoned grant writers. For people who want to add grant writing to their resume, you can learn by starting to do development and/or research.

Outreach – Outreach volunteers are always needed to share our mission and the joys of greyhound adoption.  Volunteers take the hounds to service groups, schools, businesses, active adult communities, and other organizations throughout the community.  If you are interested in volunteering or know of a group that would enjoy a visit from a greyhound, please contact
the Outreach Director.

Mentoring – This is a new program where you can provide new adopters with your good old greyhound expertise. Set your own hours and who knows -- you could make some new friends along the way. Mentors are needed.

Random and One-Time Volunteering is always needed and appreciated for other events such as Fall Festival, animal fairs, art fairs, Santa photos, bi-annual dog washes, meet-and-greets, home checks, newsletter assembly, envelope stuffing, and assisting board members and coordinators with countless other projects!
