__

DEAR GREYT FOLKS,

FOSTERING

We asked and boy did you ever come through with the Brindle Boys.

Bono, Lennon, Morgan and Spinner have all made it to foster. Foster home time will give all of these handsome fellows a better chance of soon finding their forever homes. Foster care is one of the most important parts of AGR. Giving a dog time in a foster home teaches them housebreaking and house manners ( for example not counter-surfing or jumping on people) and often exposes them to tile floors, stairs, sliding glass doors and swimming pools and a host of other things that most puppies growing up in homes take for granted. It also gives us a way to better assess the dog's personality and likes and dislikes. We often can find out if a dog seems to need a companion dog or will do fine as a solo dog, whether they really can get along with children or small dogs and cats. HATS OFF TO ALL OF OUR FOSTER FAMILIES!

The long-timer at the kennel that did not find a foster placement was Dalton. Dalton spent a short time in foster a while back. It was determined that he needs to be the only pet. IF you know someone that would like to have only one pet, Dalton just might be the guy. He's got a great personality and wants to be someone's one true love. He will return that in kind.

KENNEL INTAKES

Barb took in 3 new boys from the track yesterday. TGP still has a number of dogs in their pet kennel, nearly all boys now, so we take them as we can.
In fact, Bryan, didn't even get to eat breakfast before one of Cheryl's prospective adopters said he is the one. This tall, red boy was adopted just like that.

COLORADO RIVER TOADS

It seems that toads must be out in force this year with the rains that we have been having. A couple of weeks ago, one of our adopters awoke to her boy having a grand mal seizure. After a thorough check and observation at the vets, it was felt he might met up with one of these critters. A couple of days ago, our neighbors' Cocker Spaniel awakened them when she was having a grand mal seizure. THey immediately suspected the Colorado River Toad. Several years ago they lost a large, mixed breed dog who, unbeknownst to them, had partially eaten a toad. Your dog does not need to eat one, but merely come into contact( by licking or biting) with some of the toxic secretions that they emit when they are stressed. The toxin is a powerful hallucinogenic type drug which can cause seizures, drooling, foaming at the mouth, vomiting, abnormal heart rhythms, incontinence and even death.

My neighbors immediately began flushing her mouth with water ( make sure the water does not go down the throat), thoroughly cleaning the mouth, tongue and teeth. They had already called SAVSEC who recommended doing this until she began calming down from the seizure. Then they rushed her to the clinic. THIS IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY!!! It is important that your pet be thoroughly checked out by a vet. Dogs seem to have more encounters than cats, but outdoor cats could, too.

Interesting note, that both of these dogs had free access to the yard through a dog door and both of these events occurred very early in the morning.
Please check your yards carefully for places that these toads might hide, around trash cans, under brush or bushes or around standing water. My neighbor came home and began looking around and found a huge dead toad by their trash can. I have attached its picture as well as a couple of links about the Colorado River or Sonoran Desert Toads. I was shocked at the size, nearly as big as some bullfrogs that I have seen. My only other encounter with a poisonous toad was down in Florida when a cat encountered one. It was quite small.

BOOKMAN'S

IF anyone would like to join Jason Stewart for the Bookman's meet and greet on Ina Road, on Saturday from 11-1 , he would enjoy the help. Great if you have a grey that you can bring to join him and DASH. The Bookman's is located on the south side of Ina Rd between Shannon and Thornydale in a strip mall. This could turn into a regular tabling gig if you'd like. Please let Terry Baker, Bookman's coordinator, know if you are interested....tbaker60@yahoo.com

CONDOLENCES

We would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of adopter, Dale Shelton, who passed away earlier this week. About 2 years ago, he adopted Wyatt Earp, one of the Tombstone Gang. Wyatt is back with us and being fostered with the Altoff family.

HOME SAVVY DOGS

Earlier this week, you got our plea to find foster homes for our Bevy of Brindle Boys, who have been at the kennel too long now and need to get into a a home...Bono, Dalton, Lennon and Morgan..........Brindle is Beautiful

BUt did you know that we have some terrific DOGS who have either been fostered for some time and need to find their forever homes or are rebounds? Mancini Spats and Hobo are long time fosters, who are more than ready for their forever homes. Then there is Farrah, a sweet girl who rebounded a few months ago and sure could use her forever home. Recent rebounds include 5 year old Rodney, 4 1/2 year old Wyatt Earp and our senior gentleman, Hawk who is 8 and spent 6 years in a home. These boys all do well with cats and small dogs and will be thrilled to find their new best friends.

THINK FOSTER FIRST, when someone is looking for a dog.

TICK REMOVAL

As we all know ticks are more of a problem here than fleas and here is a great tip, for pets or people...

Tick Removal Please forward to your contacts. Useful information for garden enthusiasts, campers, hunters, or those with children or grandchildren who play outdoors or pets

A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share -- it might work for you.

I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.
Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me.
Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, 'It worked!'
It is that time of the year again. Just a reminder. :)

Ticks can cause serious problems, such as tick fevers. Ticks are prevalent in the racing industry and more than a few dogs test positive for tick fever. Here is an interesting article from the GReyhound Project.

http://www.adopt-a-greyhound.org/advice/health.html

XYLITOL

Many of us chew sugarless gum or eat other sugar-free products that contain xylitol, you may have heard that this product is toxic to animals, especially dogs who will eat anything. Caution to where we store things.

Please pass this information on to any dog owners you know. Xylitol can kill dogs. http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/xylitol.asp

PLAY DATE

Join us Sunday, July 20, from 7 to 9 PM for GREYHOUND PLAY DAY. The charge is $4.00 per family (we rent the space); and muzzles are required! We will have them available for sale if you need one--$14.00 each. This is held at the Humane Society's off leash area on Kleindale.

Thanks for all you for the hounds
Four of our greyhound boys are in desperate need of loving foster homes. They have been with us at the kennel for far too long. These boys are showing signs of depression and need some hope of a new home to brighten their lives. The only way to get our rescued racers into their forever homes is for someone to open up their heart and home to teach our beautiful brindle boys how to be part of a family.

Lennon is in dire need of a loving home. As you know, he is our special needs boy with pannus (requires eye drops everyday). While this does require medication and the need to keep his eyes protected from exposure to bright sunlight (he comes equipped, complete with his own sunglasses!), he will more than make up for this slight inconvenience with his antics and his love of cuddling. His pannus has kept him from getting out to meet-and-greets and play dates and other fun stuff, so he would really benefit from being in a home with someone to pamper him.

Next we have Dalton, Bono and Morgan, all of whom have been in the kennel for four months and really deserve the life of a couch potato, along with the additional “home schooling” a foster can provide to ready them for their forever homes. These are all big, goofy guys who love to pet and cuddle, have started to learn about squeaky toys, and have all done very well at Petsmart with people and other dogs. Note: Dalton had one short stint in a foster, and demonstrated that he would do well as the only dog in a home.

Are you able to help these boys? Call or email Barb Gadola (349-9952 or barbaragadola@comcast.net) for more information, or to take the next step. Dear Greyt Folks,

Lots of interesting things in the new in the past couple of days.

NUTRO FOODS

In fairness to Nutro Foods who has some high quality products, here is another view from their website.

http://www.nutroproducts.com/quality_facts.html - they dispute this claim
from the Consumer Affairs site as being false and state that nothing
indicates that these illnesses were caused by food. Dogs and cats get sick
from lots of things, not just dog food. Look at all the chemicals we use
around our animals and the unneeded vaccines they are required to have.

I'm attaching an article about rating your dog's food
WHAT HAPPENS WITH SEASONAL GREYHOUND RACING.

Several greyhound tracks in the country operate on a seasonal basis and when they close for the season, greyhound adoption groups are scrambling to take in the hug number of available greys. This just happened again in Melbourne, FL and this article is from Colorado/

http://www.coloradogreyhoundadoption.org/content/view/283/89/
DOGS LOOKING FOR HOME

AGR volunteer Kim States has asked us to pass this along if you might know someone in the market for small dogs- Boston Terrier and Pekingese

Hey, do you know anyone who would take a couple dogs? Female Boston Terrior and Male Pekinese both about 6 years old, need some TLC and some working on with the housebreaking. The story is: The people who own them are too busy to care for them or pay any attention to them, they are inside dogs and probably would be housebroken with someone who actually paid attention to them.

They can contact (Jessica) at 250-9747 or tucsonchik222@yahoo.com

It is sad and I am trying to keep them from being taken to the pound – this young couple had a child about a year ago and the dogs just kind of got pushed aside

Thanks for all you do
Hey Greyt Folks,

It's a little later than usual, but here is the news.....

VOLUNTEER DIRECTOR

Hooray! Cristen Olds has stepped forward to take on the job of volunteer director and board member. We are delighted to have her and hope you will all welcome her aboard. Cristen will be calling on volunteers for a number of upcoming events throughout the 2nd half of the year, the next being the August 9th Dog Wash at Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson, River and La Canada. If you wish to volunteer and never have, please go the the AGR website and complete an application and it will get to Cristen. http://www.azgreyhoundrescue.org/volunteerapp.htm If you have other volunteer questions for Cristen, please contact her at CristenAGR@gmail.com.

FUND-RAISING GROUP

I want to especially thank the great fund-raising team that we have assembled headed by Angy Shearer, the director. There is Grants coordinator, Glenda Taylor and other team members, Cynthia David, Luann Jamison and Lizzie Mead. These folks help search out funds, donors, raffle prizes, potential grantors and other possible contributors to AGR. What a great job is being done! We recently received grants from PETCO for some medical expenses and PETSMART for teeth cleaning. This is enabling us to clean the teeth of those dogs most in need. As this is a very necessary, but costly expenditure, the financial assistance is most helpful. Having such special funding allows us to have money to care for the myriad of other things that come up as well as the day to day needs of our hounds. As we all know a broken leg dog or other serious illness can take a huge chunk of money. If you'd like to join the fund-raising efforts, please contact Angy Shearer at italianangy@hotmail.com

Did you know that you can contribute on a monthly basis to AGR through your credit card? Anne Marie King, our very able treasurer, can help get the ball rolling... http://www.azgreyhoundrescue.org/html/automatic-donations.htm

NEW ADOPTION COORDINATOR

AGR welcomes Lisa Zamudio to the AGR adoption team headed up by Janet Vaupel, our adoption director. Lisa adopter of Dot(Maggie) and Odessa(Tess) will be handling Rita Ranch and Vail. We still our looking for someone to handle the central city and Green Valley/Sahuarita. If you might be interested, please contact Janet at jlvaupel@msn.com

NUTRO DOG/CAT FOOD

Libby O'Leary passed this info on from Golden Greys
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/nutro.html

ABOVE AND BEYOND

Carol Ray drove to the New Mexico border today to pick up our latest rebound, 8 yr old Hawk, who had been living in Santa Fe. Carol will be fostering him. If you know someone without small children, who would love a distinguished, laid back, senior guy, Hawk might be the one. Thanks, Carol, for going above and beyond to pick him up.

GREYHOUNDS RECEIVE PROTECTION OF ANTI-CRUELTY LAWS

Gov John Lynch of New Hampshire has signed a bill restoring greyhounds and horses to the protection of the state's anti- cruelty statute. For the first time in 9 years, individuals that abuse dogs or horses at commercial race tracks can be prosecuted. Here is the related story from earlier this year. http://www.concordmonitor.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080514/NEWS01/805140310

GREYHOUND SURVEY

Interesting from the most recent CG (Celebrating Greyhounds)... a survey of health of
retired greys. From a base of 692 participants covering 747 greys were
included. A complete report will follow but here are some highlights:

Most common cause of death is cancer...most common type was osteosarcoma.

Most common diseases:
45% cancer
33% skeletal disorders
28% skin
18% digestive
11% endocrine

Behavior:
2% aggression towards people
6% aggression towards other dogs
6% fear aggression
20% noise phobia
27% storm phobia
19% separation anxiety

Wonder how these compare to other dog breeds?

WE HAVE HAD 51 adoptions through June of this year. That is on pace for a very nice year. If you volunteer in any capacity, you have been part of this. KUDOS ALL to a job well done!. The hounds and I most thankful for your generous service.
