Dear Greyt Folks,
Lots of news tonight............
VOLUNTEER NEWS
We are pleased to announce that Karen Lutrick has joined the board of directors as the Communication Director. She brings lots of experience with marketing and PR and developing, writing and editing written materials, web content, press releases, etc. A few folks might remember her from a couple of years back as the foster mom of Maxwell and Bear. You should be hearing more from her soon..... Karen, welcome aboard!
We are still looking for a VOLUNTEER DIRECTOR. If you have WORD and EXCEL experience, enjoy talking to people and like organizing things, this may be a great way to volunteer. Please contact me at maryagr@cox.net if interested.
CALLING CAT FRIENDLY GREYHOUNDS and their People
For a long time we have wanted to connect up with another rescue group for an event(THis is good for our grant purposes). The HERMITAGE CAT SHELTER has asked us to join them at their facility on Sat, May 17th from 10-4 during their Adoptathon. They will be having some other vendors, but we will be the only other rescue group. It is the perfect time to dispel the myth that greyhounds and cats can't live together. We will have a tent since we will be outside. Because it may be getting a little warm during the day, I thought we might do 2 shifts of 2 hours each ...10-12 and 12-2. We could use 2 people on each shift with their dogs. THe Hermitage is located near 22nd and Craycroft. Buddy and I will be on 1st shift. If you and your cat friendly grey would like to attend, please let me know at maryagr@cox.net. I have attached a flyer about the event. I have also attached the link for the Hermitage. www.hermitagecatshelter.org
RINCON MARKET
ALso on May 17th will be the RIncon Farmer's Market on old Spanish Trail 9-2. Again, greys can probably only be there for a couple of hours. THere was a great turnout of adopters and fosters last time. This will most likely be the last time until the fall that we might actually have dogs there. Please contact Julia Summers if you might be able to attend at jes3940@msn.com We are looking to get regular volunteers at this venue. THe pet day is normally the 3rd Saturday of the month.
GREYS IN THE NEWS
BALLOT INITIATIVE
The Arizona Daily Star ran an article today about the proposed ballot initiative in South Tucson that wants to ban crating dogs for unreasonable periods of time, giving steroids to dogs and the feeding of 4-D meats. This initiative is from Tucson Dog Protection, a newly formed animal welfare group. If passed, likely Tucson GReyhound Park would be greatly affected. http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/237999 Go to

VIDEO SLIDE SHOW
From Volunteer and Bookman's coordinator, Terry Baker...
I have been creating a video slide show for viewing at Bookmans. The first part of it is the hounds that are up for adoption and the second is hounds in their forever homes. I would like people to email me as many photos as possible. The video runs about 10 minutes and I would like it to run a lot longer with LOTS of hounds. It really helps when we get a lot of people coming in at the same time. They watch the video while they are waiting to pet the hounds and talk to us. If you have photos that could be sent to Terry, please do so at tbaker60@yahoo.com
ANOTHER FLEA PREVENTATIVE Warning
From Adopter Judith Weiser and Slim
For the past 3 years I have been using Zodiac "Spot On" Flea & Tick Control on my greyhound Slim. I recently have noticed a funny, seemingly involuntary, reaction in the week after application. When I pet Slim from his neck down to his shoulders, his skin/fur "twists" and quickly returns to normal position. I assumed it to be a transient neurological reaction to the poison I had applied. This only went for a few days to perhaps a week. When I applied the Zodiac today, he immediately became quite restless, pacing from his bed in the living room to his bed in the bedroom, stopping only to lay his front end down and try to rub the stuff off. (He only rubbed his face on the bed; he did not lay down on his back and wiggle around.) I got concerned, as he had never done this before, and I tried to soak up the "Spot ON" from his upper & middle back & the base of his tail with a paper towel. This didn't seem to make much of a difference, so i tied washing it off with a warm
wash rag. He was still restless, but not as intent on rubbing his face on the beds. I distracted him for a while with a treat, and he has settled down. I am concerned that Slim has been building up a sensitivity to this product, and I do not intend to ever use it on him again, for fear of a severe or fatal reaction.
The ingredients are:
Premethrin 45%
S-Methoprene 3%
other ingred: 52%
Has anyone else experienced anything like this with a flea & tick control product? Please reply to jsek@juno.com
I think most folks have had favorable results with FRONTLINE Plus and we use BioSpot at the kennel.
Thanks for all you do for the hounds.
Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there
