Here is this and that for the week

VOLUNTEERING

KENNEL KLEEN -UP

IF you go to the kennel regularly, you may notice how neat and clean the grounds look as a major brush clean-up was done today to rid the kennel and turn-out areas of potential fire hazards and snake habitat. The extra- hard working crew of Joan and Paul Athey, Cheryl Bennett, Bill Carnegie, John Clark and Angy Shearer cleared what seemed a ton of brush and weeds. Many thanks to you all for ensuring the safety of all the hounds and David's dog menagerie as well. The crew also thanks Julia Summers for the coffee and donuts, too.

VOLUNTEERS

GLenda Taylor has written a letter and sent it off to a number of past volunteers that we have on our volunteer list, who have not volunteered for a while. We are trying to update our list to determine who all of our current, active volunteers are. IF you have not volunteered for a while and would still like to do so or if you are no longer interested in volunteering, please contact Glenda at bobcatroja@theriver.com to let us know.
Volunteers are the life blood of AGR. if you give several hours a week, an hour or 2 a month or step up for an occasional events your time and help our important to our mission. Thanks, Glenda for taking on this important project.

When the heat of June arrives next month and you wonder how you might cool off for a few hours, think the AGR DOG WASH, Sunday, June 8th 9-1 at Pantano Animal CLinic on the east side. The dog washes are always well attended and need a whole, big crew of people to make it go. They are the major summer fund raiser for our dogs. Pizza and beverages are provided and well as the chance to help get Tucson's dogs of all breeds spruced up. THe 2nd dog wash of the summer will be held on Sat, August 9th ay Vet Specialty on the NW side.

We need another person and a greyhound to join Karyn Zoldan as the AGR reps to talk up the dogs. Please contact me if you and your dog or foster dog can join Karyn at CLues Unlimited for this event.

IS anyone MISSING MUZZLES from the Ice Cream social last Saturday evening? Michelle found them when clearing the corral, She found 3 muzzles on the ground near where the raffle was. 2 blue and a red with padding added to the nose area. Is anyone missing these?

Please contact Angy at italianangy@hotmail.com if these are yours or more correctly, your greyhounds

HEALTH CONCERNS

HEAT STROKE

Angy found a very good article about heat stroke which she would like to pass on. This is very relevant to Tucson. Greyhounds can especially be vulnerable. The document is attached.

Here is a good link from the Greyhound Project and the Greyhound -L about a number of grey related health concerns. There is one thing I would nix in this report and that is the use of flea collars... We say this is a definite no-no. Probably the best and safest flea and tick treatment for your greys is either Front-Line Plus or Biospot (we use this on the kennel dogs)

In the NEWS

Check out the May-June issue of DESERT DOG NEWS, available in pet stores and pet friendly locations all over town. There is an article featuring greyhounds. I would like to thank Doggie Diva, Deborah Brightstar for interviewing me a couple of months ago and writing this article for the paper and thanks to DDN for featuring greyhounds.

GREYHOUND RACING IN FLORIDA..... which has 16 of the nation's 39 dog tracks and many breeding farms as well

http://www.miamiherald.com/458/story/476598.html

"Currently, investigators must ask for permission before inspecting track kennels, both on the track property and off, where hundreds of racing greyhounds may be housed. And if they find something wrong, the state sometimes must wait for action by local prosecutors before it can revoke or suspend licenses or impose fines."

They are trying to get this changed in Florida

Also Mutts did a greyhound comic strip on May 1. It is not in the MUTTS archives yet.

Thanks for all that you do for our hounds.
